Marry, put make up on, take salsa dancing classes with, go to the circus with, dress up in drag, or listen to this mix with! The title was my variation on a suggestion for the title from reader Pinkie. Also, thanks to reader Roger for the cover photograph suggestion. This mix is fairly minimal(as in not in excess of 20 tracks), and is comprised of stuff I was listening to up to two weeks ago and then new stuff from Sunday forward(unnecessary details). Anyhow, a lot of it is electronic with some garagey-noisy tracks thrown in for measure and lovability. The Duran Duran song is a re-discovered favorite thanks to the Greenburg soundtrack(I left out all of the James Murphy tracks lol). Trust me when I say that the soundtrack isn't worth it. My bright moments from it were Duran Duran and finding out that Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" is a good song to cook to.

I would like to take this chance to apologize for last week's delay. I may push for a new mix next Tuesday. I'll have to see. Might be overload.

I got onto Here We Go Magic only recently as I was looking up the artists playing Primavera Sound 2010. The whole of the new Caribou album, Swim, is great. I also highly suggest Tanlines' Settings EP. The new MGMT runs like an old Kinks album. I'm proud of them for making an anti-pop album.

Rainbow Urine Makes Them Cry

I know...absurd titles and covers, but I was feeling frisky. I know that a good portion of these are new or unheard of artists, but I tried to balance that with a few old favorites(my favorite songs from The Violent Femmes and Of Montreal. With the re-issue of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, I felt it was necessary to add in some SPiritualized).

Of the notable noobs, Sumach is also known as recent buzzed artist Gonja Sufi, the track from Primary 1 features Nina Persson of The Cardigans on vocals, and Nice Nice is a recent signee to Warp records with lesser experimental tinges of Battles.

Overall, you'll find both garage rock and dubstep are missing. I flavored more with dashes of electro instead. Neither of these are themed/genre-aligned and thusly the Snoop Dogg track kind of feels out of place. I feel that a good portion of these tracks are exceptional, and hope that you do agree. Happy post-Presidents Day, yall. Thanks go out to longtime FAGL friend Danny Guns for the rec on this mix's cover. He pointed me toward some pretty amazing worldwide Carnivale pics.

Anyhow, on to the music... This mix is highly concentrated with electronic music, whether it be downtempo lulls, massy dubstep miscarriages, smack your mouth out NYC raps, aqualung Bun B, or some weird indie pop thrown in for good measure. By this I do mean download at your own discretion. I mean, what the Hell it's up for grabs anyway right? And when have I steered you wrong? Ok maybe that one time with that B-52's remix. Also, I realize I am about some years late on Jamie Lidell's Multiply album. I saw him years back in Texas opening for Four Tet and I hated it. This turned me off to him until last week. I still don't like all the soul shit, but I really like the weird electronic jams. Aufgang is weird and may take a second to get into(if you do at all). It's a mixture of classical piano and dance music. Odd, yes.

Rep Day, Bitches!

No clue what this image is for, but many thanks go out to longtime reader and FAGL friend, Nicky K Twosocks, on this cover suggestion. Anyhow, I present Rep Day. Instead of clogging up your iTunes/whatever player with 2 mixes worth of tracks, here's just one. It's a beautiful, sleek amalgamation of everything all rolled into one cd-r's worth of awesome. I've tried to bring in as many sounds as I could. Just a few days ago, after a couple hours of scouring, I had accrued 599 new tracks. This is the best of that.

Notes:
Gil Scott Heron was a pretty influential dude back in his prime(before drug arrests). The two tracks of his on this mix come from his comeback album, recorded in between two prison stints due to felony cocaine possession charges.

Josiah Wolf is the older brother of Why? frontman Yoni Wolf, and is also the drummer of aforementioned band.

AS far as I know, the Caribou track is Dan Snaith's first foray into dance music territory. This track is smooth...super smooth. in his own words, he was going for a "liquid" feel, whereas many other dance tracks are metallic.

The Jay Reatard and Jeff Mangum tracks are both off of a compilation called Stroke- Songs for Chris Knox. Knox is an influential musician from New Zealand. I highly recommend buying this whole album as it features many other attracting artists(Bonnie Prince Billie, Yo La Tengo, Magnetic Fields).

Randy Newman...yeah. I did that.

Wu Tang VS the Beatles. it's a mashup without being terribly tacky and it doesn't feel hastily put together int he least. The whole album feels somewhat natural. I prefer this to the Grey Album(possibly because I prefer Wu Tang to Jay Z...this might, however, be an unfair comparison as it is the work of one rapper to many...) Strands 1 and 2

Here I present for your (hopeful) pleasure Strand 1 and Strand 2. Strand 1 is of the rock variety, as per usual, and 2 consists of electronic and hip hop entertainment. I won't bother with spilling my favorites. Both of these have seen some severe revision, as they originated as one mix initially. Hope you enjoy. Also, dubstep somewhat returns. Yoni Wolf is Why?, or as his current role entails the singer of Why?. That track is from his recent Daytrotter Session. The Seabear track is an older one, from 2002. I can't think of any other notes.

BWSHFTM/Love Jones? Not at Home

A double load for the New Year. Happy belated, btw. It's been a while and all that really means is that I've accumulated a mass of treasures or you've gotten bored enough to start listening to Owl City. Either way, we're both back now in this new year and we can be friends again and share these wonderful musical gemstones shiny shiny pop em buoy! Sorry, anyhow, I had 3 mixes prepped and culled them down to 2, in the process genre-lizing them.

BWSHFTM is more rock oriented, but that's not to say that it's boring. As per usual, it contains a good deal of garage/60s rock, but also some more indie pop oriented material as well. On top of that, a bit of noise too. Yay!! Favorites for me are tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7...I can't do this. I like all of them, so instead will list my least favorite: Track 11 is my red headed step child(only here because his daddy is paying the light bill).

Love Jones? is more dancey and hip hop related. There's the ever present Grime remix, the Cali rap, the breathy vocals of the XX return, the traditional dirty electro(of huoratron in this case, yumm!), new Cool Kids, a fresh minimal techno track with an indie rock super star on vocals, and a bunch of random remixes and weird shit thrown in for effect! Check the interpolation/spin of White Town's "Never Be Your Woman". Remember that song? 5th grade for me, holmes. Faves are: 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 15. But wait!? What's missing here? That's right. It's Dubstep.

Love them or hate them, but i implore you to listen to them.

dear Friends, countrymen, strangers, internet fiends, and lovers,

It's been quite a while since I've doled out full albums.  As you may(or may not) know, in the past when I have posted full albums, I have done so because I found them to be essential.  Well, simply put, this has not changed.  I find these five to be no exception, and fully endorse all of them.  For this bout, I'm going with relative unknowns that have struck a major chord with me(harrr:  pun!).  Additionally, I've tried to bring you albums as diverse as I plausibly can while still making sure they're albums that I truly love(and not fake internet love for cred).  From the bright, bubbly sounds of Luciano's soft, boyish techno to the screeching guitars or whatever the fuck that is within the Electric Bunnies to the no frills, just-fuck-you rock of the two piece JEFF the Brotherhood to the Geoff Barrow(of Portishead) led Kraut rock loving Beak> album, it's all there(as intact as my terrible grammar in these posts).

Life's a Fucking Blur

Isn't it though? I know I promised this mix earlier in the week, but several things happened and I didn't get around to it(such as yesterday having no power for a majority of the day). Anyhow, here it is. I actually had another one that was all rock oriented, but decided it wasn't good enough. I hate when Pitchfork beats me in putting out tracks. It's been a goal of mine to attempt to beat them on getting out relative unknowns(G-Side in this instance). On the other side of it, I did get Chiddy Bang, Theophilus London, opiou, Pill, and a couple of others :D If you're not a fan of electronic music, hip hop, rap, american/brit urban stylings, or amalgamations of all of these, then I dunno if I'd bother with this. Otherwise, if you do enjoy these things, mmmmm yes.  As always, click either picture for the zip.

I really feel like this is one of the best mixes I've made in a while with all heavy hitters, no fillers. Yum.

Hey, Haircut

So, it's not quite been two weeks and it's also the first time I've posted a single mix in a while.

I made the cover yesterday for a friend of mine as a motivational desktop sort of thing. I like this mix a lot. I borrowed a few tracks from Andrew Johnson's 2000 and whatever mix that he posted. Ron got me into Earth Quake over the past few weeks. They were on a label called Berserkley, which was early home to Johnathan Richman(of the Modern Lovers) The rest are random finds. I apologize for the skip on the Time Flys track, but, hey, what am i to do?

A Mix for Girls and A Mix for Boys

Lemme know what you think. Although I don't necessarily think that girls will hate the boys mix and vice versa, I did find it amusing to set the mixes up this way. Two Kings

I got the inspiration for the title/cover while driving past Graceland yesterday. It started out as a terrible idea for a tattoo, then morphed into this. It was also originally Jesus and Elvis. Anyhow, I hope you'll enjoy this mix. There are some fairly interesting songs on it. I quite enjoy the Atlas Sound(Bradford Cox of Deerhunter) track with Noah Lennox (Panda Bear of Animal Collective) opener. The Elvis Perkins track is a remake of one of his songs off of the "In Dearland" album. I don't know how I missed A Place TO Bury Stranger's cover of Holy Fuck's "Lovely Allen" back in May, but I did. That's definitely my favorite Holy Fuck song. I tried to place some lesser known bands on here such as Brite Lite Brite, Sweet Trip, Church, and a local favorite, The Bulletproof Vests. Ezra Furman plays the Hi Tone in November, I initially got onto the Elliott Smith track again as it was sampled in RJD2's "Ghostwriter" track. RJ fans, see if you can spot it. I am loving the Rae track. The Neil Young I'm somewhat sure you've heard before, but is off of a recent Remaster.





All around a decent mix. I never know what to say about the tracks. Form your own opinion and lemme know.

Old Man Music

The title came to me because of the initial track. Michael McDonald sounds soooooooo odd on Grizzly Bear's "While You Wait For the Others" particularly in the layered harmonies. No theme here or anything of that sort. Although a couple of the artists will be playing Memphis soon. Toro y Moi will be the initial opener at The Island's show at the Hi Tone on October 29. Dávila 666 will be playing at Gonerfest. The Beatles track is off the new stereo re-masters. I really dig that this new collab between Themselves and Why? sounds nothing like either of them individually. It also sounds naught like cLOUDDEAD. The Cody Chesnutt song is in an axe commercial, no comment.

A friend got me hooked on This Heat recently after I shared some HEALTH with him. The This Heat track is from their 1977-released Peel sessions. It's amazing for that time period as well as now. I really dig the Pantha Du Prince song, but those not loving the sounds of either clanging objects or thudding bass should probably keep away. Tyondai Braxton is the lead singer of Battles and all around weird/talented dude.





I am thinking of switching back to a bi-weekly format if time and intake allow. We'll see. For now, enjoy Old Man Music (reminds me of Old Man River).

It's been a while, as always... Anyhow, I present the latest batch of crap that's been on my itunes. Some of it is new, and some just new to me. I had to go out with a bang on "Fun" with some fantastic metal. There's no real theme between either mixes. They both contain equal parts everything, although "Walken" does lilt toward more rockishness. "Fun" has a lot more noise, but I knew in order to get certain people to listen to it, I would have to add some dance... /cough Anyhow, Hope you enjoy. Hate/Love it? Tell me!

Happiness Abounds/Communist Dander

hello all, hello wall,

I can't believe it's been 2 months. As per usual, most of these tracks have been sitting around on my hard drive since early June. I've been gone a lot and will be gone a lot in the near future too. In happy news, I will finally be able to see one of my heroes, Doseone, with my favorite incarnation of his music, Themselves, in Portland next week. YAYAYAYAY! anyhow, on with the music:

This mix feels more light hearted and joyous. There are moments of depth and melancholy, but for the most part this thing is joyful!






Communist Dander
This mix is 40% garage rock new and old, 10% old anti communist country, 20% dancey electro/dubstep/hiphop, 5% funk, 15% classic rock, 10% random. I challenge you, the lsitener, to tell the difference between the old and new garage rock(without allmusic, wiki, etc.). It shouldn't be that hard. I just want you to think about what you're listening to.





I'm very pleased with both of these and feel that filler is at an all time low. Of course this could be from my lack of posting mixes regularly. I apologize for that, to the regular downloaders especially. Sorry for the slowdown. As always, thanks for stopping by and checking it all out.
