Welcome. These are called mixes. If you like the artists, go buy their music. I might do that too! More likely, if you like the artist, go see their live show.

5 for X-Mans

dear Friends, countrymen, strangers, internet fiends, and lovers,

It's been quite a while since I've doled out full albums.  As you may(or may not) know, in the past when I have posted full albums, I have done so because I found them to be essential.  Well, simply put, this has not changed.  I find these five to be no exception, and fully endorse all of them.  For this bout, I'm going with relative unknowns that have struck a major chord with me(harrr:  pun!).  Additionally, I've tried to bring you albums as diverse as I plausibly can while still making sure they're albums that I truly love(and not fake internet love for cred).  From the bright, bubbly sounds of Luciano's soft, boyish techno to the screeching guitars or whatever the fuck that is within the Electric Bunnies to the no frills, just-fuck-you rock of the two piece JEFF the Brotherhood to the Geoff Barrow(of Portishead) led Kraut rock loving Beak> album, it's all there(as intact as my terrible grammar in these posts).

Life's a Fucking Blur

Isn't it though? I know I promised this mix earlier in the week, but several things happened and I didn't get around to it(such as yesterday having no power for a majority of the day). Anyhow, here it is. I actually had another one that was all rock oriented, but decided it wasn't good enough. I hate when Pitchfork beats me in putting out tracks. It's been a goal of mine to attempt to beat them on getting out relative unknowns(G-Side in this instance). On the other side of it, I did get Chiddy Bang, Theophilus London, opiou, Pill, and a couple of others :D If you're not a fan of electronic music, hip hop, rap, american/brit urban stylings, or amalgamations of all of these, then I dunno if I'd bother with this. Otherwise, if you do enjoy these things, mmmmm yes.  As always, click either picture for the zip.

I really feel like this is one of the best mixes I've made in a while with all heavy hitters, no fillers. Yum.

I've got nothing else. Hope you enjoy. Lemme know.

Hey, Haircut

So, it's not quite been two weeks and it's also the first time I've posted a single mix in a while.

I made the cover yesterday for a friend of mine as a motivational desktop sort of thing. I like this mix a lot. I borrowed a few tracks from Andrew Johnson's 2000 and whatever mix that he posted. Ron got me into Earth Quake over the past few weeks. They were on a label called Berserkley, which was early home to Johnathan Richman(of the Modern Lovers) The rest are random finds. I apologize for the skip on the Time Flys track, but, hey, what am i to do?

Faves for me are:
Surfer Blood=Weezer+the Shins(thanks Dan)
Tap Tap
Devin Davis
Small Black(amazing what they pull off)
Bibio(both the original and the Stith remix)
Best Coast(it's cute)

Sleigh Bells is loud and yes it's supposed to sound that fucked up. Also be warned that the Swell Maps track is loud loud loud( for you headphone listeners).

Take it easy. Lemme know what you think.

A Mix for Girls and A Mix for Boys

Lemme know what you think. Although I don't necessarily think that girls will hate the boys mix and vice versa, I did find it amusing to set the mixes up this way. It was a joke at first, but I decided to stick with it. As always, I start out with one completed mix and then get a shit ton of new music and make two out of it. Hope you enjoy. My definite favorite has been the Skream remix of Chromeo's "Night By Night".

The Lights and the March

These have been building up for a few weeks. One is purely electronic/hiphop and the other rock. Both covers are from the BBC's coverage of one of China's national holidays(I had asked for suggestions from a friend).
The Lights:

The March:

Highlights to me:
both versions of Antipop Consortium's "Volcano"
Turbo Fruits "Volcano"
Pac Div "Mayor" which i initially caught thanks to mtv 2(WOW they still play music!)
Benga melted my face with the bass in "Buzzin'"
Alan Braxe's remix of Beyonce
Real Estate
Both The Feelies tracks
The Fall(which was hard to choose as I had amassed a smattering of 10 of The Falls' albums in a matter of hours)
Boredoms
Patton Oswalt(whose latest album, My Weakness is Strong, is absolutely phenomenal!)

also, thanks to Pinkie Larue for the heads up on the Phoenix remix with Banhart

Lemme know!

GLK

Because I think it's equally crucial and excellent, I present LA dj, Gaslamp Killer's Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting FOR YOU! mix.

such such such an awesome mix.

what others are saying:

"The psyche head's psyche-beat selector-of-choice follows up a terrific slash and grab selection for Finders Keepers with a more personal mix of fiery picks for his own home-brewed imprint. We're not going to dwell on it, but that first track is completely doing our nuts in here, and with no tracklisting to go on we're just resigned to pulling our hair out. But you can expect slightly more obvious elements from DJ Shadow, to Bar 9, Rustie, Jefferson Airplane, Bullion and Can lurking around in the spongy vinyl soup hidden beneath GLK's shocking locks and spilled all over this mix. Basically no one stands up to this crafty character for sheer selections, mixing prowess and overall gameplan, while actually making some sort of coherent sense of this constantly mutating and feedback looping world of music that we live in right now. The mad ones are always the best, in every sense of the word." - http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=226726

what I'm saying:

He fuses everything from kraut rock to early 90s NYC gritty hiphop to norwegian psych to bass wobbling dubstep . Well worth a listen or 10.

bonus: if you wanna get nerdy and know everything that's on it(or as close as I've found thus far: http://www.last.fm/music/the+Gaslamp+Killer/_/Hell+And+The+Lake+Of+Fire+Are+Waiting+For+YOU%21/+wiki )

also, new mix from me coming next week.

Two Kings

I got the inspiration for the title/cover while driving past Graceland yesterday. It started out as a terrible idea for a tattoo, then morphed into this. It was also originally Jesus and Elvis. Anyhow, I hope you'll enjoy this mix. There are some fairly interesting songs on it. I quite enjoy the Atlas Sound(Bradford Cox of Deerhunter) track with Noah Lennox (Panda Bear of Animal Collective) opener. The Elvis Perkins track is a remake of one of his songs off of the "In Dearland" album. I don't know how I missed A Place TO Bury Stranger's cover of Holy Fuck's "Lovely Allen" back in May, but I did. That's definitely my favorite Holy Fuck song. I tried to place some lesser known bands on here such as Brite Lite Brite, Sweet Trip, Church, and a local favorite, The Bulletproof Vests. Ezra Furman plays the Hi Tone in November, I initially got onto the Elliott Smith track again as it was sampled in RJD2's "Ghostwriter" track. RJ fans, see if you can spot it. I am loving the Rae track. The Neil Young I'm somewhat sure you've heard before, but is off of a recent Remaster.

All around a decent mix. I never know what to say about the tracks. Form your own opinion and lemme know.

Old Man Music

The title came to me because of the initial track. Michael McDonald sounds soooooooo odd on Grizzly Bear's "While You Wait For the Others" particularly in the layered harmonies. No theme here or anything of that sort. Although a couple of the artists will be playing Memphis soon. Toro y Moi will be the initial opener at The Island's show at the Hi Tone on October 29. Dávila 666 will be playing at Gonerfest. The Beatles track is off the new stereo re-masters. I really dig that this new collab between Themselves and Why? sounds nothing like either of them individually. It also sounds naught like cLOUDDEAD. The Cody Chesnutt song is in an axe commercial, no comment.

A friend got me hooked on This Heat recently after I shared some HEALTH with him. The This Heat track is from their 1977-released Peel sessions. It's amazing for that time period as well as now. I really dig the Pantha Du Prince song, but those not loving the sounds of either clanging objects or thudding bass should probably keep away. Tyondai Braxton is the lead singer of Battles and all around weird/talented dude.

I am thinking of switching back to a bi-weekly format if time and intake allow. We'll see. For now, enjoy Old Man Music (reminds me of Old Man River).

Enjoy it? Hate it? Meh it? Lemme know what you like and don't.

Thank Jehovah For Walken & It's All In Good Fun

It's been a while, as always... Anyhow, I present the latest batch of crap that's been on my itunes. Some of it is new, and some just new to me. I had to go out with a bang on "Fun" with some fantastic metal. There's no real theme between either mixes. They both contain equal parts everything, although "Walken" does lilt toward more rockishness. "Fun" has a lot more noise, but I knew in order to get certain people to listen to it, I would have to add some dance... /cough Anyhow, Hope you enjoy. Hate/Love it? Tell me!

If you're in Memphis(8-21 and 8-22), come out to Rock For Love 3 at The Hi-Tone Cafe.

Happiness Abounds/Communist Dander

hello all, hello wall,

I can't believe it's been 2 months. As per usual, most of these tracks have been sitting around on my hard drive since early June. I've been gone a lot and will be gone a lot in the near future too. In happy news, I will finally be able to see one of my heroes, Doseone, with my favorite incarnation of his music, Themselves, in Portland next week. YAYAYAYAY! anyhow, on with the music:

Happiness Abounds
This mix feels more light hearted and joyous. There are moments of depth and melancholy, but for the most part this thing is joyful!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Communist Dander
This mix is 40% garage rock new and old, 10% old anti communist country, 20% dancey electro/dubstep/hiphop, 5% funk, 15% classic rock, 10% random. I challenge you, the lsitener, to tell the difference between the old and new garage rock(without allmusic, wiki, etc.). It shouldn't be that hard. I just want you to think about what you're listening to.

I'm very pleased with both of these and feel that filler is at an all time low. Of course this could be from my lack of posting mixes regularly. I apologize for that, to the regular downloaders especially. Sorry for the slowdown. As always, thanks for stopping by and checking it all out. Please feel free to leave comments of rejoice, hatred, pleasure, whatever.

P.S. Yes, that is Hil Clinton

P.P.S. That weird face on the second mix's cover is bologna. Yeeeeeaaaaaah

yikes, dudes

here comes a slew of s***. It's been a while and as always I've been lazy. I've had these ready for a few weeks now and thusly some of the newer tracks might already be played out. Hey, let's hope not. Anyhow, no more talkie.

additionally, i've switched to a new uploading format with my webspace. What does this mean for you? No more mediafire!

Oh Savage Delight/We Live Here Now

I started making a mix about 3 weeks ago. It was a mixture of the two. I got fed up with it and decided to seperate them into electronic/synth and rock/whatever. The covers were inspired by a recent camping trip to Reelfoot Lake in northwestern Tennessee.

Favorites for me are Correcto, Xylos, Golden Silvers, Bill Callahan, Grandpaboy, and Warpaint on Oh Savage Delight.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Regarding We Live Here Now, both Jogger tracks, HEALTH, Au Revoir Simone, and "Seaweed" from Clark.

I generally like all the tracks, but those are merely my faves. As always, lemme know what you like/dislike/meh.

I love you all. Goodnight.

P.S. I f*cking love spring. I didn't catch a single fish while at Reelfoot, but I really loved the weather/camping/fire building.

P.P.S. If you have some 3-d glasses(which I don't), check out the Creature from the Black Lagoon on the Oh Savage Delight cover and let me know if the 3-d imagery works.

Ciao.

Lady Face & Me

I made this mix weeks and weeks ago(same old story, i know) and even upped an early version of it. I just never made art for it. Finally I did so today and while upping the revamped version, I began making a new one. I know this is not a good trend for me to be getting in to. Putting out multiple mixes at one time isn't fair to you, the listener. So, I apologize. This may be the last time haha. Maybe not. We'll see. anyhow, I present

Dem For the Win or Truck in a Tree(oh shit)

A double dose. I had a mix all prepped, but then quit my job and left town for about 10 days. Went to DC and got a new president there. Got back and promptly got ill. I threw out the old mix that I had ready and made 2 whole, new ones.
They're dandy. Hope you like. Plenty of new and old artists to feast on and derive pleasure from.

I came really close to not including the Animal Collective song, as almost everyone and their cousin has been talking around it. I'm excited to say that I'll be seeing them in June, finally. I feel these are two strong mixes. Find out for yourself. As always, comments are adored.

The Three(as promised)

Well, I promised a bevy of mixes and here they are. As always, click the pictures for the link download.

The First is a gratuitous mix based off of the word "Fuck". It's called For Those About To Fuck(We Salute You). I think you(the viewer/listener) will enjoy it as much as I have. It's a mixture of raucousness and rap.

The following two are based on a 3 day span including Yesterday and Today, then Tonight and Tomorrow. It's dumb, but I wanted to try it out. :P

Here is Yesterday and Today. I feel that you'll know at least some of the artists if you frequent my blogs.
