Savagery

30th post. Hard to believe(mind you, not the 30th mix), but here we are. I've had a lot of time to compile this one, since the last couple were themed. Thusly, it's gone through many edits and changes as I've found new things to add(and grown tired of others). I started out this week with a song from ? & the Mysterians. It was a song that I loved in my childhood, and I was delighted when I found out that they are playing the Hi Tone in May. I know they are dinosaurs by now, but I'd still like to see them perform. I'm sorry if you do not like Daedelus, because there's a double dose this week. Both tracks are pretty laid back (with the first track having a background of frenetic energy running rampant and the second remaining calm). Most listeners will probably delete the HEALTH and Disfear tracks, which is why I put them together at the end. I don't usually use interludes, but I decided to use "crap 1-3" on this one. I don't really know what else to say...well that's a lie. I feel that an American producer could have made the Gonzalez track and made it tighter. I like the song, but it's production could be stronger.





I came up with the idea for the cover while I was doodling in my job training last week. I drew a guy being chased by a bunch of flaming matches. The tiger says "bullshit" because that's how I feel their Saturday game was. Anyhow, hope you enjoy.

I feel that this explains itself(given the date). This is my last themed blog for a while(thankfully). I'm ready to return to normal posting. :)

The Questions

This week is a theme mix. Bahaha, how silly is that. Next week's Valentine's mix will also be themed. This week I imagined a short conversation between 2 people carried out in song title. check it. Not all of the songs are amazing or mindblowing, but it's a cute little idea. So give it a shot. The Liars track is a couple of albums old, but still excellent. Same with the El-P.




Next blog, we'll deal with love and more love. Tonight I'm going to see Band of Horses. I missed most of their set at Pitchfork 2 years ago, so I'm excited to see them now.

Space Case

Lately, I've felt like one. I started to call this shot in the dark and try to make a black background like Metallica's black album with a black outline of a corpse with stark red blood flowing out...but i got lazy and did this. check my chupacabra.


Anyhow, I start out this week with The Cool Kids who have had a revival on my LAst FM charts. when the hell is their full length coming out? Then slip into a little known nugget from about 3-4 years ago, the Daedelus track is from a split 7 inch between D and Boombip and features both of them remixing Donnie Darko score songs. Admittedly five of these tracks were pre-sourced(like that?) from another mix. I'll be amazed if any of you can tell me whose mix(unless of course your next step is just to google the tracks enough to figure out...even then I'd still be amazed that you gave that much of a shit lol) anyhow, my standouts:

Midnight Juggernauts-such a weird sound. The distorted drums of the likes of Justice with subdued vocals leading into a soaring chorus

Mancino-Brooklyn nerd rock ala I don't have a clue. It's catchy, but not trashy. A nerd's Vampire Weekend with all the pop sensibilities but lacking the sound that makes the panties drop(what the hell am i talking about anymore?)

Alan Braxe and Friends- This track is nuts. I love it for what I feel like it should be...an afterhours coke jam. strung out people hugging.

Coach And Four-yes, I want this album to sell,s o go buy it. This song is about the Memphis Tigers 1985 NCAA team, so if you're a tigers fan like moi...well...it doesn't disappoint.

Back to the briefs...Beck covered Korgis' track for the Eternal Sunshine Soundtrack. Another awesome track from local producer/DJ, The Sky Patrol. Bill Callahan plays the Hi-Tone on February 28, so if you haven't heard him, HERE'S YOUR CHANCE. Same with Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat. They play the Hi-Tone with the Black Lips on March 21. Fuck, I love the 8-bit keys from crystal castles. They're crazy. that's all i can say. I'd have to upload many more songs for you to understand. Speaking again of Boombip, he and doseone's track has always been a favorite from their album, circle(their one and only together).

And of course, where would I be without a Fourtet remix? Have a nice afternoon.

Bonus Round Memphis

What I've done here is take some of my local picks and made a special mediafire folder for them. The first few albums featured here consist of 2 from The Lost Sounds(the self titled is my preferred...tell me yours) and Jay Reatard's Blood Visions. Reatard was also in the Lost Sounds... If you've been on this blog for a while, I've posted tracks from both camps in the previous. Also of note, Reatard has signed on with Matador Records for a series of singles(AWESOME!!! YAY MEMPHIS MUSIC!!)

New Yearworks

I apologize for being behind on releasing this. It's been a busy few weeks. Hope everyone had a good new year. I had too good of one and woke up drunk the next day and couldn't complete sentences properly until the sun had gone down again. SO, anyhow these tracks...how about them...




If you're a regular then you've heard the Kate Bush track before, as I posted the Chromatics' version some weeks ago. I apologize if you're not a Feist lover, all of the Feist tracks are remixes(so maybe you'll still enjoy). The Amplive track is off the soon to not be released Radiohead remix disc. This past week, he was ordered to desist from making the album(bummer, since the included remix of nude is pretty grand). blah blah happy new year. enjoy my fireworks. Lots of dancy music on this one. I dunno why.

Everything's Fine

All of these tracks were co-opted from other blogs muahaha. Enjoy them all. This mix is somewhat hap-hazard and rushed, as I have been pretty busy lately. I went to the Zoo for free today and saw the Polar Bears swimming. Love. I'm new to most of these people. The Ris Paul Ric is a couple of years old and is a definite standout. The Diplo remix of Spoon is from this past week. The Fagget Fairys track has been on constant in my car.

Also, I'm enjoying the new Beach House quite a bit, and am excited because they're palying the Hi-Tone in MArch. I wanted to go see them when they came this past Fall/Summer whenever it was, but they were opening for the National...boo...now they're headlining, yay! Plenty of great shows coming up at the Hi-Tone...Band of Horses, Black Lips, Beach House, High On Fire, Jason Isbell...

Whatever You Want

Well, Pimp C died this week. It's been a good couple of weeks, but this isn't the place for me to talk about that.




Anyhow, the music this week starts off with The Monks, a band that I am just now getting into. I'm glad that I have though. Their Black Monk Time album from 1966 is flipping amazing proto-punk/rhythm driven kraut rock. I was immediately in love and if you look under this post, you'll find a video of theirs.

A new Wu track is included from the 8 Diagrams album. The rest is standard fare. I mean, I'm here to supply this music, not write about it too much. I like it because I do. Maybe you'll like something in it as well, but I find it pointless to just list reasons why I like the songs. haha just enjoy. Contradicting myself, in "Roberta C" from casiotone, I love the lyric "scrabble high score 409". Recently, I've been playing a lot of scrabulous on facebook and I'm still trying to beat that 409. I keep hovering between 310-350 range. Also, I'm going to go ahead and apologize for the Andy Kim song. It's been in a commercial lately and has been in my head a good deal.

This week I was unable to devote much time to the art, as you can tell. I did this in about 4 minutes from finding the picture of the Mach, to transferring my face to it. Whatever. I had to write a paper comparing the role of fear in Hobbes' Leviathan to Mach's The Prince, so I had it on the brain. Anyway, what's important.

The music:
I'd already completed an early of this mix about 1.75 weeks ago, but with trying to keep a consistent release schedule, I held it off. Glad I did, in those 1.75 weeks, I added new music to the hard drives and kept changing this mix. This is version 5.

Standouts and general info:

The Holy Fuck track is pretty cool. They're an organic rock band that makes music that emulates electronic music. heh
Another Justice DANCE remix, but this one is special considering who is on it. or maybe that's what makes it not so special. I like Spank's initial verse, but the rest is ehhhh...
Elzhi is amazing, nothing new there.
The Fink track is enjoyable. He sounds very similar to Mike Doughty of Soul Coughing fame.
I was rewatching the first season of Curb Your Enthusiasm recently and "Still Crazy..." was featured in the ep and made me want to download it. Did so and it's been on repeat ever since.
The Burial track is insane to me. I can't describe what I love about it, but whenever it comes on in the car I can't go to the next track without listening to it about 4 times in a row(unless someone else is in the car). I only recently discovered that the vocal samples are from Ray J's "One Wish" and my mind was blown. How the hell...?

The Album Leaf track is beautiful. Who would expect less?

and the final track from Avey Tare(of Animal Collective) and his wife, Kria Brekkan(formerly of Mum) is indeed a strange one, but a good one to end on.

I feel confident about this mix. It's all over the place, as usual, but enjoyable. I hope you feel the same.

Jack the Bear and a fat man on a fake bull

I apologize that it's been a little longer than 2 weeks since my last post. I've been trying to remain consistent with these posts, but it's hard sometimes. I've been out of the house a lot and got fed up the first time that I tried making some art for this beast. I finally got the patience to sit down and cut out way too many joggers and just get it over with. Around this time, I was sipping some White label Dickel and ice and started having fun with the bear/jogging pictures. Anyway, enough about the image(as is my standard, click the pic for the mix):

I had heard the Chromatics' Plaster Hound album and really couldn't believe that this was the same band as I heard doing "Running Up That Hill"(which is a Kate Bush cover and I'm going to go out on a limb here and admit my own ignorance of who that actually is). Anywho, that's my favorite track off of the (new) Chromatics album, Night Drive. I was only recently introduced to Say Hi To Your Mom by a good friend and "Prefers Unhappy Endings" was the first track that I heard. I really enjoy it and it's sure to get lodged in your brain(as in drunk humming it at the international house of pancakes at 4 in the morning).

The Frankie Valli track is really stand out to me. I don't know it's initial release date, but I know it's old(somewhere in between 62 and 67). I love love love the drums/bass in it. love them. seriously. Good movement there. Way to go, frankie.

I had a few Apparat tracks a few mixes back. I had never come across his collab with Ms. Allien until last week and immediately I dropped the Fugazi track that I had initially put on here and put this on instead. B/c who out of my readership has never heard Fugazi? Seriously, comment if you haven't and I'll upload a whole mix of just Fugazi.

Yeasayer is cool and I thought I was cool for hearing them first until I picked up a Fader and BAM there they were, all up in my face. I included the sage-like advice track of Dan Le Sac as a means of passing it on to those who've not been graced by his preaching. The video is better, go find it on YOUTUBE. Backtracking a moment, go listen to a young ass Jay-Z on "Can I Get Open?" Dan(not Le Sac), if you read this, you'll recognize the beat on that track, I promise.

The Annie Lennox track was in American Beauty and I watched it again recently
and the track moved me. blah blah blah unwarranted sentimentality.

Ugly, Calla, and m## are all throwback tracks spanning the past few years. If unfamiliar, Ugly Casanova was a short spanning side project of Modest Mouse frontman, Isaac Brock. It's grand. The m83 track may get on your nerves.

The Hangar track is depressing and you'll probably only want to hear it once in your life(think an aural version of Requiem For a Dream, but not quite as deep/dark...more so full of regret)
. I liked it as a closer though.

Also, I tried my best to keep this mix under 100mb so I could upload it all in one go. I succeeded at 99.5mb=yeah!

The Details Don't Matter Much

This mix contains no distinct patterns(to me at least). It is equal parts old and new favorites.
The Lucero track is a bit of rarity. It comes from Makeshift Music 3, thusly, if you live outside Memphis, you've probably not heard it. I cannot believe that I didn't put any T. Rex on here. Over the past 2 weeks, I've listened to Marc Bolan so much. Anyhow, I think you'll enjoy these tracks. Some of them will hang with you for about a week and others will stay with you much longer(hopefully...if I'm doing my make-no-money-just-enjoyment job right).

I added some parallelism to the hiphop mix that I released the other day. Examples are the anitmc track here(which features Andrew Broder aka Fog), as opposed to the one on the hiphop mix. The only other example is the Black Lips track. The original is heard here, while the more meaty beaty version is held of Smell of the Ocean. SECRET TREASURES.

Smell of the Ocean

As always, I am a rabid Four Tet fan and thusly wanted to start with his quirky, weird music. As I said in my previous post, I made this mix hand in hand with a rock mix. This one features an assortment of weirder hiphop and 1 dance track thrown in for no measure at all. Some of it(Antipop) coming from years ago, and some of it(Aesop) coming from this year. I've been a fan of Antipop Consortium for years from the strength of their Arrhythmia album alone, but I recently got ahold of Tragic Epilogue and became enamored once again. I was kind of turned off by their Ends Against the Middle EP, so I figured anything predating Arrhythmia was not so great(2002/2003 logic here).

Anyhow, enclosed is an assortment ranging from French rap(TTC and dDamage), Mush Records artists(antimc and Thavius Beck), etched-in-marble-to-honor-once-legends name drop tracks(Edan and Arsonists), upstart frenzy artists(The Cool Kids/Justice/Black Lips(Diplo Remix)).

I decided against releasing both mixes on the same day, as I feel that would require you to scroll through way too much of a page.

Sorry, I've been a busy boy, volunteering at the indie memphis film fest, hanging out with J Spake for his birthday, et al. So as a reward, tomorrow i am releasing 2 mixes. I gotta get off my ass and get to work on the "art". Mix 1 is rocky and mix 2 is (bullwinkle)electronic/hip hop.

I'm finally getting to see my first flick from the film fest tonight, as all i've been doing the rest of the time is conversing with pushy, pretentious out of towners about their upsets and they ones that've actually lived up to their expectations. Tonight some jack ass from Alaska was giving me shit for not letting him enter early into a sold out showing.

Hyde's Clouds

I'm in love with this mix. It usually takes me longer than a week to collect one that I'm really proud of. I guess it's been a good week. Once again, I had to go back to Lost Sounds. I officially stopped pirating their shit this week when I bought a vinyl copy of the self titled album(which "Ophelia" is from). Future of the LEft is 2/3 of the Welsh band, Mclusky(whom I adore and advise you to check out). Blockhead is a producer from NYC who has done much work with Aesop Rock on albums such as Float, Labor Days to current. Santogold caught my ear recently being bumped from downstairs. I really liked the sounds. Shit is crazy. The MIA track was ripped from Diplo's Pitchfork Mix. I wasn't able to find the version with Bun B and Rich Boy anywhere else. Bat For Lashes was found on Kanye West's blog. I'd never heard them(her), but this video turned me on.

Odd Nosdam(of cLOUDDEAD fame) has released a new album on anticon. The track included here is from said album and features Why?. The Sky Patrol is a local DJ/Producer that I've been enjoying recently. Holly Golightly will be playing the Hi-Tone on October 19. The Harmony Brothers are a local band that I've been getting into. This is my favorite of the tracks from Ttheir myspace page.

anyhow, I hope you enjoy this. I've burnt it for my car and it won't come out for a while. Starts off garage/nasty ish, then shifts to more beat oriented music then off into wonderland/purgatory before coming down in a most unsettled, yet funky manner.

Rise Up Reading!

The title is from a google image search that I did. I found a flyer for Children's Book Week some time in November, and I loved it immediately. Again, with this mix it's a lot of what I've just been up on as well as some songs that I haven't revisited in a couple of years(such as Hymie's basement). I cobbled together Can's "Sing Swan Song", then Kanye's "Drunk & Hot Girls" which samples it directly, and since I'm not a huge fan of Kanye's track, I then switched off to A-Trak's Remix of "Stronger". Unfortunately my garageband was acting a fool(still is) and I couldn't splice them up properly into 3 separate tracks, so my apologies for the 10 minute track. Anyhow, hope you enjoy!
